{"id":123,"date":"2009-06-10T00:23:09","date_gmt":"2009-06-10T00:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hakawitech.wordpress.com\/?p=123"},"modified":"2009-06-10T00:23:09","modified_gmt":"2009-06-10T00:23:09","slug":"educause-conference-in-rhode-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/virtualactivism.org\/education\/educause-conference-in-rhode-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Educause conference in Rhode Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Educause and NERCMP [Northeast Regional Computing Program] organized a confence in Rhode Island, March 10-12 2009 <span style=\"font-size:x-small;\">entitled <strong>Creative Intersections, Wise Collaborations, and Sustainable Technology<\/strong>. The conference explored how the many challenges in higher education IT form crossroads of opportunity for educators to work together across\u00a0 campuses, and with peers in other institutions across the country, to find sustainable solutions and best practices for today and tomorrow. Discussions revolved around teaching and learning to enterprise systems and from e-research support to IT leadership. The conference was also a great opportunity to network with peers across US campuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are the sessions I attended and some details from that conference:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>I- First Session:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>The Cite is Right [Dartmoth College presentation]<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using clickers to advance student \tengagement.<\/li>\n<li>Challenge was to generate lively \tdebate and accommodate resistance and overcome fear and boredom. In \tparticular international students have a problem with citations.<\/li>\n<li>The questions were collaboratively \twritten by the team and presented to faculty for their input.<\/li>\n<li>Questions presented situations and \tcase studies rather than rules and regulations sent to judicial affairs at the \tend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">Lessons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>facilitate with energy<\/li>\n<li>professors have to be there<\/li>\n<li>use it for multiple classes \ttogether and not just one<\/li>\n<li>generate debate<\/li>\n<li>use it sometime after each class \thas gotten to know each other [this creates classroom cohesion]<\/li>\n<li>give out prizes [gift certificates \tetc]<\/li>\n<li>manage contestants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>II- Second Session [2-2.50 pm]Room 553<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>Web 2.0 Information Literacy: Wikis for Engaged Learning: using online collaboration to investigate cases and build knowledge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">Presenter: Jay Fogleman, URI and Mona Anne Niedbala<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">How do educators capitalize on students&#8217; comfort with ubiquitous online tools to leverage critical thinking and strengthen their information literacy skills?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">Using wikis for research, collaboration, critical thinking and knowledge building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>Babson college presentation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>use it as content repositories.<\/li>\n<li>An evolving set of teaching notes \tfor faculty using the case in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Quick access to supplemental \tmaterial<\/li>\n<li>ability to include multimedia \telements<\/li>\n<li>give students exposure to tools \tbeing used out there [web 2.0 tools]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">Used Confluence as wiki platform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>III- Third Session: 3-3.50 pm &#8211; Room 551<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>Twitterpated by Twitter and Other web 2.0 technologies for instructional purposes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">presenter: Alexandra Pickett \u2013 SUNY<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">How available technologies like Twitter were used in a summer online course and can be used to enhance instruction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">Map of the world 2.0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">To be more effective<br \/>\nHer best tools: seesmic, jing, youtube quickcapture, diigo, polldaddy, mogulus<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>IV- Fourth Session: 4.35-5.25 &#8211;  Room 551<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\"><strong>The mapping controversies web directory: harnessing students&#8217; collective intelligence<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>educause conference, Rhode Island<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-123","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-conferences"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.7 -
